Amitostigma pinguiculum - FS tuber
Amitostigma pinguiculum - FS tuber
An exquisitely miniature terrestrial orchid, Amitostigma pinguiculum is endemic to Eastern China. This super cute and super rare species is surprisingly hardy, like many tubular miniature orchids. It sprouts in December, often bearing one (sometimes two) disproportionately large flowers for its size, then goes dormant by May or June. During dormancy, it propagates underground, and with a few years of care, you’ll typically have an entire population.
Generally, this species is easy to grow, though it does require a mild vernalization period from December to January. For about two weeks, it needs temperatures below 40°F but kept above freezing (32°F). During its growth period, provide ample water in a well-draining substrate. Once it enters dormancy, place it in a moist, but not waterlogged, substrate in a cool area, allowing it to propagate and surprise you with new growth the following year.
An ideal, delicate indoor species, Amitostigma pinguiculum is hard to resist! Available as flowering size or near-flowering-size tubers, it’s a perfect time to plant them, with the growing season just around the corner.
