About this species

The God tier centipede, Scolopendra gigantea, is one of the largest and heaviest centipedes in the world. Largest recorded individual is around 38 cm.

There are two color forms. One has a jet black body with banded legs, while the other is golden brown with lighter yellow legs. Both have a wide, heavily built body and unimaginable size.

It inhabits warm tropical forests, rocky areas, and caves. It is mainly a nocturnal hunter, feeding on insects and other animals, with large individuals capable of overpowering small vertebrates. There are also reports of scavenging, including feeding on dead animals along beaches and fallen fruit on the forest floor.

Its care is more demanding than that of an average Scolopendra. It requires warm temperatures, moderate humidity, a large and extremely secure enclosure, and a specially designed diet. Despite its intimidating appearance, keepers describe them as surprisingly calm and less defensive than other Scolopendra. Captive breeding likely contributes to this behavior.

A rare, awesome find!

Centipede arrived alive and well with lots of energy! Looking forward to watching it grow into a massive specimen. Froggnose Exotics was very helpful with providing info via email as well! I’ve been looking for a Gigantea for a while now, and this is the first breeder I came across with a trustworthy reputation that had some.
