The rugosus hermit crab, Coenobita rugosus, is a small to medium sized land hermit crab often called the “ruggie.” Among land hermit crabs, it stands out for its incredible color variation. Individuals of the same species can look completely different, with some blue individuals resembling blueberry hermit crabs and reddish ones resembling strawberry hermit crabs.
It lives around sandy shores and coastal vegetation, sheltering beneath driftwood and leaf litter. It usually forages at night for fallen fruit, plant material, and animal remains. Compared with C. brevimanus and C. cavipes, it generally stays closer to the shoreline.
Care follows the usual tropical land hermit crab setup. It requires stable warmth, high humidity, deep moist substrate for molting, climbing areas, and plenty of spare shells. Provide both freshwater and marine saltwater with easy exits, alongside a varied diet containing plant foods, animal protein, and calcium.
