About this species

The Blueberry hermit crab is one of the most beautiful and recognizable land hermit crabs in the world, famous for its solid blue or purple coloration.

Young individuals are usually white or pale grey, but their colors become more intense as they mature. Adults can range from powder blue to deep purple or almost black purple. They have long white eyestalks, yellow rings around their eyes, and a large left claw with four or five raised ridges. These are important characteristics for distinguishing young Blueberries from similarly colored C. rugosus.

They are mainly nocturnal omnivores that feed on fruit, plants, carrion, and other organic material.

Their care is similar to that of other tropical land hermit crabs. They require warm temperatures, high humidity, deep substrate for molting, plenty of spare shells, climbing areas, and access to both freshwater and marine saltwater. Their diet should include fruit, vegetables, animal protein, and calcium rich foods.
