About this species

The pirate crab is one of Vietnam’s larger and most beautiful freshwater crabs. It usually appears in three main color forms: red, yellow, and blue.

Pirate crabs are known for having one large dominant claw. Both males and females possess an enlarged claw, mature males develop an incredible hook shaped claw similar to that of a fiddler crab. They spend most of their time underwater or inside burrows near the water and are powerful hunters capable of catching fish and invertebrates with surprising speed.
