About this species
The Halcyon giant centipede is an ultimate tier centipede and one of only three known amphibious species of Scolopendra. Described in 2021 from the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, it was placed under emergency protection in Japan shortly after its discovery. Its incredible jade blue coloration and body length of over 20 cm give it an almost mythical appearance.
Unlike most centipedes, Scolopendra alcyona spends much of its life around forest streams. It can move through water with impressive speed and skill, hunting freshwater prawns, crabs, and other aquatic invertebrate.
Its care is considerably more difficult than that of a normal Scolopendra. It requires a secure paludarium with both land and clean, well maintained water. A diet centered around freshwater crabs or crayfish is commonly used to keep them healthy and help them reach their full size.
